Chapter 2: hatching a plan

I drove everyone to my house in Leelanau County. The place hadn’t been reached by zombies yet, because they were all coming from the south, so I figured it would serve as a shelter, at least for the moment. I sent everyone downstairs, while I went into my room and grabbed the only book that would be good in this situation, the Zombie survival Guide, by Max Brooks. As I joined everyone downstairs, everyone stared at me as though I was their only hope. But then I saw Devon sniggering, and I had to ask,
“What?”
“Dude, that book is fake!” was his answer. Everyone nodded in agreement, and the best comeback I could think of was,
“Well, it’s the best we got!” this only made everyone start laughing. It started to really get on my nerves. When I had finally had enough, I screamed at them,
“If you guys didn’t notice, there’s a virtual manslaughter going on out there! Tim’s dead and we’re next if we don’t shape up and get serious!” that seemed to shut everyone up. For a minute no one said anything, but then……
“So what do we do?” if I hadn’t seen Sam’s lips move, I wouldn’t have thought she said anything. She had been very quiet ever since we first met at the mall, and I had tried to avoid eye contact. I had had a crush on her ever since the last school year ended, but nobody in the room apart from Devon knew it. But the minute she said those words, something inside my head clicked, and the next thing I knew, I was saying,
“Sam, Ana, Sabrina. Take this book.” I threw it to them. “Inside’s a list of supplies we’ll need to survive. Go upstairs, find some backpacks, and start loading up supplies. Anything we don’t have, make a list. Eric and Justin, you guys set up a perimeter. Any zombies come this way; you get your asses back here and tell us. Marcus, you go and start the car. Be ready to leave any second.” Everyone just sat there, staring at me until I said,“Move it, people!” they all scrambled to their feet.
“What about us?” Anthony, Amanda, and Devon were standing there, looking hopeful.
“Come with me.” I said, and I led them to my dad’s workshop, where I opened up a safe.
“My dad thought he got everything important, but he forgot these!” I said, as I pulled out 10 guns. “There’s ammo in that drawer there, take as much as you can.” I said, opening the drawer. We started loading up. For the next hour, we were undisturbed by any sort of distraction, whether it was a zombie or otherwise. But then Justin came running up to the back door, followed by Eric. After he caught his breath, he told me,
“Dude, our asses are dead meat unless we get the heck outta here now!” I looked out the window and saw that he was right. Thousnds of zombies were pouring over the hill. In a weak voice, I told everyone,
“Get to the car, now.” We grabbed the backpacks with all the supplies, and went out to the driveway, guns ready. At first everything seemed okay, until Devon said,
“Where’s the car?” I looked around and saw that he was right.
“Where the fuck is Marcus with my car?!” I said. To answer my question, a bus came hurtling over the hill and parked in front of us. The doors opened and Marcus popped his head out. The only question I had to ask was,
“What happened to my car?” Marcus answered simply,
“Exploded.” Before I could ask why, I heard the moaning of the zombies get louder, and I told everyone,
“Get in! We gotta go!” And then to myself, “this isn’t over.”
